Who knew that there were so many awesome jobs for girls to do? Nola Krieg tells us what it's like to create ice cream flavors for a living, and why she thinks "food science" is the coolest science of all.
A.I grew up in Hawaii and had a great childhood. I was a complete tomboy and played a lot of sports. Whenever I could get my hands dirty, I did.
Q. What inspired you?A.I loved my high school science teacher, Mr. Cook. I was really interested in the science of food, or how food changes. In college, I studied psychology and nutrition.
Q. Tell us about going to culinary school.A.After I graduated college, I got in to Scottsdale Culinary. I was so determined to do it on my own that I took out a student loan to pay for school. I graduated valedictorian. I even gave my graduation speech!
Q. What is it like to create ice cream flavors?A. You have to be creative! I love to create flavors for Cold Stone Creamery's international locations, like roasted potato ice cream in Korea, cherry blossom ice cream in Japan and chipotle chocolate ice cream in Mexico.
Q. It sounds like learning about other cultures is really important.A.Learning about the way people around the world live and eat is so important. Be curious!
Q. What do you like about your job?A. I love working with food -- especially ice cream. It makes me feel good to know that my next creation will be eaten by a lot of people. I also love that if I am having a bad day, I can go down to the lab and create something fun.
Q. What do you consider to be your biggest success?A.Girls are told, " a woman's place is in the kitchen." Ironically, it is not true. The food business is dominated by men. I had to really prove myself.
Q. Is there a quote that inspires you?A. " Don't compromise yourself. You are all you've got!"
