How fun is that? WATCH THE VIDEO!
A.I was a Women's Studies major a million years ago. No journalism training or degree. I wrote for magazines about issues that are important to women before starting Adventure Divas. My path has been to find projects I am passionate about and kind of plow my way through, as if I knew what I was doing - not always pretty, not always successful, but it's worked for me.
Q. Being a filmmaker sounds exciting. What's it like?A.For me, the best thing about making films that I'm passionate about is that when I'm in the process, it feels like I'm living in a way that is true to myself and that I'm pursuing my dream. It's always hard to find the money, and to make the creative vision that's in my head a reality... but hey, if it wasn't hard it would be boring. Filmmaking is not glamorous (unless you become Steven Spielberg or something), but it's fun!
Q. I know you've been to Iran, New Zealand, India... all over the place. Is it as amazing as it sounds to travel to such exotic places?A.Travel has absolutely been the most important thing in my life. It has given me direction every time I was at a crossroads; it has kept my life in perspective. It has provided the funniest moments in my life. It has made me understand what a powerful global sisterhood there is, and helped me find my part in it. It has shown me what the important work is.
Q. You call the women you interview "Divas." What is a Diva anyway?A.A Diva is a girl, or woman, who takes the time to find her passion and then goes for it... no matter what. She has a great sense of humor and isn't afraid to fail. The realization of her dreams, her individuality, and actions will create a powerful force in the future.
Q. I know you've interviewed a very cool girl rap band in Cuba. Who are some of the other awesome Divas you've met?A. I've met many brave, unique women out there. Shahla Sherkat in Iran is super courageous. She publishes a magazine (The Ms. Magazine of the Middle East... ask your mom) that takes on extremely sensitive subjects regarding women's rights. And all under the watchful eye of a government that pretty much tries to stop people from writing about that stuff. Ruchira Gupta and Ela Bhatt fight for the rights and dignity of women in India who have few people to stand up for them. I love Keri Hulme from New Zealand because she wrote the best book ever and she likes to fish too.
Q. How did these Divas get so much courage?A. I think something that allows these Divas to be so bold is how they address fear. We all have fears - they certainly do. But what the Divas I've met seem to do is take all that energy we spend on fear and turn it into ACTION. Few people truly don't have fear, it's what you do with it that's key.
Q. But what if you fail?A.Failure? Oh my, my life is riddled with them. But I always tried to take lessons from the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt who failed a lot (as all risk takers do). But she kept bashing away and ended up creating enormous change. Everybody has a ton of failures but that's not what you hear about. Maybe failure just paves the road to success! A wise person once said to me; the only wrong decision is no decision. As an indecisive Libra, I try to remember that. Whenever I feel frozen by indecision or fear, I try to remember that things can be undone or changed, if what you choose turns out to be the wrong direction.
Q. You seem like a cool adult. What were you like as a kid?A.I was a tomboy who, from a very young age, looked out for what was unfair between boys and girls. Only, the suburban version like, "Why do I have to do the dishes AND cut the lawn while he ONLY has to cut the lawn?" As I grew up I guess I was always drawn to the folks whose stories weren't getting told. Getting stories told is the best way to make change. I thought telling these inspiring Diva stories on television could make that change.
Q. How do you get to be a Diva?
A. Being a Diva doesn't mean you have to traipse across the Australian Outback... It's how you walk to school or to the corner store. It's a mindset. It's what you do with your fear. It's also how you respect - and act on - your passions. And don't give yourself a hard time. Respect the time it takes to figure out what your passions are. Then go for it!
One of the Divas Holly features in her film series is Cuban filmmaker Gloria Roland, whose definition of a Diva is "A warrior, and a dream woman and a woman who dreams. An earthly angel whose wings are imagination."
So have fun finding your wings, Girl, and soar!
